Make a difference by investing in close-to-nature forest management

Slow finance – sustainably invest money with green returns. All this, without exploiting nature or people. Our tropical noble woods grow under ecological conditions, when sold, achieve strong returns, which we in turn pass on to the members of our cooperative.

Sustainable investment

Immune to the losses and gains of the stock market, our trees grow little by little each day – and are considered some of the most valuable woods on our planets. Our sustainable investment approach requires patience, as returns grow at the same pace as the trees. Subsequently we avoid the implications of speculative assumptions on issues such as rising price of wood and land.

Cooperative economies for the next 100 years

The green money generated by our investment opportunities help save the planet. We manage permanent forests which will continue to produce noble woods such as mahogany and Spanish cedar in 100 years’ time. Our business model was established on the foundation of a long-term forest and financial plan. We believe that the challenges of sustainability can only be solved by thinking in the long-run.

Expected development of distributions over the next 100 years

Note: This graph has been adjusted for inflation. It does not include any price increases for wood and is based on an exchange rate of: 1 USD = 0.876 EUR.

Our reforestation projects require time before the first trees can be felled. The target internal interest rate, i.e. the average annual returns over 100 years is 4.5%. The initial dividends will be paid in 20 years. Please consult the graph to find more detailed information on the dividends.

The value increase of the wood investment is reflected with a mark-up (entry fee). This mark-up solely applies to newly issued shares and is determined at the General Assembly each year. As a result, we have a fair system whereby future returns are equally divided amongst all members, regardless of when they purchased their shares. The initial one-off entry fee is due when the member joins the cooperative or their share is increased.

A forest is subject to a range of natural risks Thanks to a sound risk assessment report and the over 25 years of experience of our forestry partner, we are prepared for the possible risks our plantations may face and have taken the required precautions. Please find information on the potential risks and the measures we have taken to minimise these in the overview – Risks of investing in forests..

Fair tropical wood – sustainably produced noble woods from the rainforest

Our carefully selected portfolio of over 20 different native tree varieties contains a diverse range of fast and slow-growing tree species. They are at the heart of our generation forests. Our sustainable tropical wood and forest management is FSC certified.

Join our cooperative today and make a lasting difference with your money

By purchasing a forest share from us, you can benefit from a simple investment and simultaneously help to benefit our planet. This is what makes the generation forest unique, it promotes a balance between people, the environment and returns. Each share plants 500m² of new generation forest.

Sustainable returns – save the planet with your money:

We are a dynamic, growing cooperative with an innovative forest concept that combines protecting the climate with financial returns. In addition to our green investment, our climate projection project helps to sustain species diversity and create employment opportunities, where they are urgently required. Our members and the following generations will benefit from our generation forests.

Forest investment with 25 years’ experience

With Futuro Forestal as a strong partner at our side, we are able to draw on the past 25 years of experience. At the time the Panamanian forestry engineer Iliana Armién and geographer Andreas Eke from Hamburg established the forestry enterprise Futuro Forestal in 1994, at the time there were no other sustainable reforestation projects in Central America. They have since consolidated their expertise in recent years by specialising in profitable and reforestation projects with native tree species in Central America.

  • A high level of expertise for the implementation and management of reforestation projects with native tree species
  • Futuro Forestal has already planted 9 million trees (9000 hectares of regenerated forest)
  • It has also realised over 50 different social projects in Central America

How your money is used

One cooperative share is used as follows in the work of our cooperative:

Land

Our cooperative owns all the land that is used for our reforestation projects. This ensures that we are able to guarantee that the forest will remain ours forever.

Forest

The vast majority of cooperative capital is invested in the development and management of the forest: preparing the soil, planting and managing the trees and the forest.

Cooperative

The cooperative uses one quarter of each share for administration, reporting, quality assurance, auditing and marketing purposes.

As a social business, we are committed to our mission. We work on a cost basis, which means that all profits go to our members, and we maintain a high level of transparency towards interested parties and members. We are happy to share our financial models, financial figures, contracts, reports, title deeds and other documents with those interested.

Why we invest in Panama

A number of political, economical, logistical and climatic reasons determine where we locate our projects. Panama is strongly integrated into the international community and offers reliable framework conditions. In contrast to temperate latitudes, forests located in the tropics grow at an impressively quick pace. Our members can benefit twofold from this: More impact with regards to protecting the environment and climate and quick and efficient investment growth.

As a company, we are firmly anchored in Panama through our co-founders and partners. We maintain strong relationships with the many stakeholders there. Furthermore, Panama has introduced progressive policies for reforestation projects in recent decades. As a part of this policy, the reforestation “Alianza por el millión” emerged. We, as the cooperative, are the first non-Panamanian company to participate in the initiative.

  • Investment protection agreement between Germany and Panama
  • US Dollar as a stable currency
  • Stable democracy with strategic significance for world trade
  • Tax exemption for profits from reforestation projects
  • Government bond rating: Baa1 (Moodys), BBB+ (S&P)

Our reforestation projects

We have benefited from a number of strategic advantages by locating our projects throughout the regions of Colón and Darién. The projects in Colón are located on a mountain ridge on the Caribbean coast with close strategic proximity to the port at the Panama Canal. The projects in Darién, in Eastern Panama, require further logistics paths but benefit from the region’s rich soils.

La Reina

Region: Darién
Area: 25 Hectare
Project begin: 2017

In 2017, we started our first reforestation project in Panama “La Reina”. We purchased the land to demonstrate how a monoculture can be transformed into a generation forest.

Rio Gatun 1

Region: Colón
Area: 49 Hectare
Project begin: 2019

“Gatun 1” is named after the river Gatun, which provides the Panama Canal with water. The finca lies directly in the river’s basin. Our forestry engineer and co-founder Iliana Armién has estimated that this finca was felled over 30 years ago.

Gatun 2

Region: Colón
Area: 49 Hectare
Project begin: 2021

This project is a finca on a plot of land directly on the Gatun river, which is connected to “Gatun 1” via a small path. Like the other projects, it was previously used as a pasture for livestock.

La Connexion

Region: Colón
Area: 49 Hectare
Project begin: 2019

Of our three projects situated in Colón, the finca “La Connexión” is the project with the largest percentage of existing rainforest. Its name reveals the connecting role it plays in the extensive rainforest region.

La Ponderosa

Region: Darién
Area: 49 Hectare
Project begin: 2020

This finca combines many things we are looking for: Good quality soil, quick growth and good accessibility. Furthermore, the project will also introduce a new tree nursery in the village of Piriatí.

Region: Darién
Area: 70 Hectare
Project begin: 2021

With the end of the dry season, the planting season begins on our finca “Castro”, to give the young seedlings a good start.

Region: Darién
Area: 83 Hectare
Project begin: 2021

Our finca “Las Claritas” is also located in the region of Darién and is close to other fincas of our cooperative. We plan to start the reforestation of the finca in June.
