What is a Generation Forest?

What is a
Generation Forest?

A forest principle that has been designed to balance the needs of nature and people. It is unique, because its forests are made to last. It is a sustainable reforestation concept, that uses a variety of local species. Our forests consist of multiple generation of trees. Young and old a cultivated together in a permanent system. The different generations of trees have a positive effect on the forest and the animals who live in it.

At first, we are looking for suited land for our Generation Forest. In most cases, these are abandoned cattle pastures, that cannot be used any longer. After analysing the soil, local tree species are selected for each project. The most resistant trees are planted initially. Later, the density of trees is reduced, to stimulate growth and favor the best individuals. After a few years the timber of larger trees will be sold and the harvested trees replaced.

Benefits of our Forestry Approach

Native Species
Native species are perfectly fitted for the local environment. On many soils, growth rates of native species are higher than those of exotics.
Mixed Tree Species
We use a portfolio of 20 different timber species. This gives us the opportunity to select the best mix of species for each project.
High Benefits for the Environment
Reforestations with native species function as a home and corridor for a variety of animals.
Sustained Profits
Not only our members but also the next generations profit from the returns of our lasting forests.

Forestry Partner

Futuro Forestal, founded in 1994

When the Panamanian forestry engineer Iliana Armién and the Hamburg geographer Andreas Eke founded Futuro Forestal SA in Panama in 1994, there were few sustainable reforestation projects in Central America. Shortly after inception, Futuro Forestal realized the first FSC-certified project in Panama and Nicaragua. These were the first projects with local tree species instead of exotic species. Building on this idea, Futuro Forestal finally realized the biggest reforestation project with native tree species in Central America. During their 25 years of existence, they have gathered experience with over 70 different native tree species. Out of these 70, a selection of 20 are used today in different reforestation projects. To date, Futuro Forestal has planted over 9000 hectares for individuals, families and institutional investors, and has realized more than 50 different community and educational projects in Central America.
