Reforestation to combat climate change

Our reforestation projects comprise several generations of valuable tree varieties native to Central America. Through our unique forestry approach, over time, a diverse forest will grow that will both sustain itself economically and replicate the natural rainforest.

The principle behind the generation forest – the most sustainable approach to reforestation

Our forest concept is based on the rainforest, which has proven itself to be particularly resistant for millions of years. The generation forest is a forest principle that was created to balance the requirements of people with the environment. Unlike in plantations, the concept is unique as the forest isn’t simply cleared. We plant a healthy mixture of different native tree varieties. Young and old trees are cultivated in a continuous canopy cover system: This diversity of tree species and canopy structure enables a positive impact on the forest and wildlife that inhabit the forest.

Reforestation on bare land

We plant permanent mixed forests consisting of native tree varieties on cleared areas. They are ideally suited to the local environment and can therefore grow optimally. Thereby, we produce forests that are not only environmentally but also financially beneficial. By replanting the next generation of trees early, after the first thinning, an ecosystem oriented on a rainforest with multiple canopy layers emerges. The generation forest remains intact even if individual trees are felled.

Reforestation is an affair of the heart.

I've worked as a forester for over 25 years in the tropics and specialised in planting native tree varieties. Typical reforestation projects in the tropics generally consist of monoculture plantations with exotic tree varieties. Many investors are simply interested in achieving quick returns. However, such short-term thinking simply doesn’t go hand in hand with sustainable forestry. In contrast, the generation forest combines the positive financial elements of a plantation with the environmental benefits of a rainforest.

Working towards a healthy world climate

Deforestation and the associated land-use transformation has contributed to approx. 20% of global greenhouse emissions. In contrast, our forests remove at least 14 tonnes of CO2 per year from the atmosphere and stores the carbon in trees. As a comparison: Purchasing three cooperative shares is just as impactful for the climate as deciding not to take an annual transatlantic flight.

Protection against pandemics

We can help to strengthen our natural resilience to pandemics, especially zoonotic pathogens, if by working together to combat climate change, creating new habitats and connecting ecosystems. According to the “dilution effect”, the decline of habitats is a major factor that can make us more susceptible to the emergence of pandemics. Our reforestation projects and protection of rainforest help to strengthen the resilience of our natural ecosystems.

Our long-term partnerships

The concept of the generation forest was developed by our co-founders and forest partners Iliana Armién, Andreas Eke and their team in Panama. This partnership includes a number of various actors such as indigenous communities, research institutes and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The Generation Forest emerged in the form of a cooperative. Futuro Forestal has supported us as a cooperative in a personal and spiritual way since our establishment. We are proud to enjoy a long-standing partnership with this pioneer in sustainable, tropical reforestation.

Our reforestation projects

The majority of reforestation projects concern individual, exotic tree varieties such as eucalyptus, acacia or teak. Once these projects have ended, the monocultures are subsequently cleared and the land is left in a worse state than beforehand. We take a different approach to growth – with a financially and environmentally sensible alternative, based on replicating the natural rainforest. We are currently working on 4 reforestation projects:

La Reina

Region: Darién
Area: 25 Hectare
Project begin: 2017

In 2017, we started our first reforestation project in Panama “La Reina”. We purchased the land to demonstrate how a monoculture can be transformed into a generation forest.

Rio Gatun 1

Region: Colón
Area: 49 Hectare
Project begin: 2019

“Gatun 1” is named after the river Gatun, which provides the Panama Canal with water. The finca lies directly in the river’s basin. Our forestry engineer and co-founder Iliana Armién has estimated that this finca was felled over 30 years ago.

Gatun 2

Region: Colón
Area: 49 Hectare
Project begin: 2021

This project is a finca on a plot of land directly on the Gatun river, which is connected to “Gatun 1” via a small path. Like the other projects, it was previously used as a pasture for livestock.

La Connexion

Region: Colón
Area: 49 Hectare
Project begin: 2019

Of our three projects situated in Colón, the finca “La Connexión” is the project with the largest percentage of existing rainforest. Its name reveals the connecting role it plays in the extensive rainforest region.

La Ponderosa

Region: Darién
Area: 49 Hectare
Project begin: 2020

This finca combines many things we are looking for: Good quality soil, quick growth and good accessibility. Furthermore, the project will also introduce a new tree nursery in the village of Piriatí.

Region: Darién
Area: 70 Hectare
Project begin: 2021

With the end of the dry season, the planting season begins on our finca “Castro”, to give the young seedlings a good start.

Region: Darién
Area: 83 Hectare
Project begin: 2021

Our finca “Las Claritas” is also located in the region of Darién and is close to other fincas of our cooperative. We plan to start the reforestation of the finca in June.
